The Eastern metropolis of Slovakia, Košice, is dazzlingly dominated by the Cathedral of St. Elisabeth, which stands on the main square. Along with the extensive area - the cathedral, the Gothic Chapel of St. Michael from the late 14th century and the Urban Tower, it is a national cultural monument.
St. Elisabeth's Cathedral is the largest temple and the most important work of Gothic architecture in Slovakia and at the same time it is the easternmost monument of its kind on a European scale.
Since its inception, the cathedral has undergone a number of building alterations and, therefore, visitors can see many monuments from different periods in the church.
However, visitors will be enchanted not only by the exterior facade, but also by the spacious interior with its rich decoration. At the entrance, your eyes will immediately glimpse the main altar of St. Elizabeth, which was built between 1474 and 1477. It also includes the largest European set of 48 Gothic panel paintings.
Rákoczi's crypt with four sarcophagis, which retains the original medieval style of early Gothic and is freely accessible to tourists, also has its charm. The North Tower of St. Elisabeth Cathedral called Žigmund Tower offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of the city.
