Description

There are volcanoes also in Slovakia. Today, they are extinct, but they thundered lava once. One of the already extinct but still very young volcanoes is the volcanic hill Ragáč. Its peak reaches 537 m above sea level and this extinct volcano was active about 1.4 million years ago.

Today, it is a popular tourist place located east of the village of Hajnáčka. It is an extremely interesting geological formation, the top of which is a slag cone. When wandering through these peak, you often find fake caves, i.e. caverns after the volcanic eruptions of a once very active volcano.

In addition to its former volcanic activity, this mountain is also interesting because it is located in the Cerová Highlands Protected Landscape Area in Novohrad region. Below the summit, there is an oak forest and also a stone sea that was created by a lava flow.

From the village of Hajnáčka, there is a green hiking trail leading towards the Ragáč - mostly along the forest road and is approximately 1.5 km long. From the highest point of Ragáč, there is a beautiful view of the whole region. The location is also known for other interesting hills or even ruins of castles.
