The historic gem of the picturesque village of Poniky is the medieval church of St. Francis of Assisi. The church rises on a hill above the village in a fenced area. It was built during the first quarter of the 14th century and at hat time, it was consecrated to John the Evangelist.
The medieval church has a simple structure consisting of a longitudinal nave, a quadratic presbytery, a northern chapel, a sacristy and a ossuary. It is therefore a typical village church, which was characteristic for that time. The church was rebuilt several times with late Gothic and Baroque elements.
The interior is dominated by fresco decoration, but there is also an ancient painting. The walls are complemented with holy paintings. In the church, there was originally a wing altar from the end of the 14th century, from which only two parts of the left wing have been preserved. The late Gothic altar of the Virgin Mary dates back to 1512.
The church belongs to the local parish of the Roman Catholic Church, managed by the Capuchins of the nearby monastery. Worship services are held regularly in the church. The sightseeing of the church can be arranged in a nearby monastery in person or in advance by phone.
