Liptov Castle was once the highest located castle in Slovakia. It rises on Sestrč Hill above Kalameny and Bukovina.
Its position was defensive. The castle was built by King Béla IV in the 13th century. It has been destroyed several times, subsequently repaired and expanded. Since 1340, it was the seat of Liptov County.
After the suppression of the anti-royal conspiracy in 1471, the castle was conquered by King Matthias Corvinus and completely destroyed. Only a part of the wall has been preserved under the overhang of grassy soil.
The ruins of Liptov Castle can be reached by two routes from the village of Kalameny or from the village of Bukovina. A trip from Kalameny is recommended. The yellow hiking trail will also take you to the borehole and small lake with thermal mineral water.
Directly from the lake, you need to climb steep road first through the forest, later accross the meadow to Sedlo pod Kráľovou. You can take a short break halfway to the castle. This allows you to recharge the energy and enjoy the surrounding views. Then continue through the thin forest up the well marked trail. The last section of the hike must be overcome by a ladder.
From the ruins of the castle, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the whole Liptov. Hike can be done within 2 hours there and back, with smaller children it may take up to 3 hours.

„Úžasné výhľady, námaha stála za to. Možno malé upozornenie, počas horúcich dní, ako sme boli my bol rebrík úplne horúci. Treba byť opatrný, nám pomohlo chytať kov tričkom. A pred búrkou bola neskutočná invázia ovád 😱. Repelent asi podmienka. Inak nádherná túra, lokalita a zakončenie kúpeľom 😉“

„My sme išli na vrch po modrej značke, pre bežného turistu ako sme boli my je to náročné. Dolu sme išli už po žltej značke vychádzkovým tempom. Trochu škoda, že nám pršalo, ale bola to aj tak pekná túra.“

„Prekrásny výhľad z hradu, hrad je síce len zrúcanina, ale veľmi pekne upravená...drevené mostíky, lavičky...skvelo odvedená práca! Prístupový železný rebrík je trochu problém pre bojazlivejších! Túru určite neodporúčam pre deti, nakoľko sa vyše hodiny šlape len a len a len do kopca. A tiež neodporúčam po daždi, lebo terén je pomerne šmykľavý! Odmena v podobe kúpeľa v horúcom prameni stojí zato. Medokýš Kalameny je veľmi príjemné spestrenie dňa, relax.“
