Jesuit church and underground crypts

Description

The town of Skalica boasts of a diverse tangle of sacral buildings with a rich history. Under many of them, underground crypts ar built, but not all are explored and made available to the public. However, the largest crypt under the Jesuit Church is landscaped and accessible.

Jesuit church of St. Francis Xavier is characterized by its two-tower facade, which has an immensely monumental impression. The church stands on the edge of the square in Skalica and its foundation stone was laid in 1693. Originally, there were eight altars in the interior, only the main one has been preserved, with an altar painting depicting Francis Xavier and statues of St. Peter and St. Paul.

The most interesting part is already mentioned underground crypts with tombs of members of the Order. Underground crypts breathe unusually ancient atmosphere and their visit is definitely a unique experience.
