The Central Slovak Gallery in Banská Bystrica is the third oldest regional gallery in Slovakia and of all regional galleries, it has the most differentiated creative concept - regional art and Slovak art, Slovak graphic art, foreign graphic art.
The gallery manages and uses almost 14,000 art objects from the 20th century. It is located in the Praetorium building (old town hall), which was built as part of the Banská Bystrica city castle complex after 1500.
The Praetorium focuses mainly on the presentation of short-term exhibitions of current forms of contemporary domestic and foreign art. The three-storey exhibition space of Pretoria Central Slovak Gallery comprises five large halls. In 1970, the gallery opened the first international exhibition in Praetorium.
The permanent exhibition of the gallery is represented by the works of the prominent painter Dominik Skutecký. The exhibition is located in his villa and presents a cross-section of the artist's creative periods from the Venetian to the peak of the Banská Bystrica period. He places particular emphasis on his more civilian portrait work.
